Colorado Weatherization Day highlights free energy services

Governor Bill Ritter Jr., the Governor’s Energy Office (GEO), the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP), and Sun Power, Inc. a local service provider, celebrated “Colorado Weatherization Day” October 30th, in Denver.  The event highlighted the free services through the Energy $avings Partners (E$P) Program of the Governor's Energy Office and available cash assistance from LEAP, both of which offer relief from higher utility bills due to the heating season. The Weatherization services provided by E$P have provided Colorado’s neediest families with safe, warm, comfortable homes through energy saving measures. Homes that are weatherized can see that their average monthly energy bill can be reduced by 15 to 30 percent. For every dollar invested in weatherization, at least $1.30 in energy-related benefits is returned.

LEAP now available for hard working Coloradans

Coloradans struggling with their utility bills can receive help through LEAP, which is now accepting applications. The program provides cash assistance to help families and individuals pay winter home heating costs.  With additional funding from the Federal government for 2008/2009, LEAP has increased the amount of money it can give to assist vulnerable families.  LEAP pays the highest benefits to those with the highest heating bills and lowest incomes by family size. Applicant income cannot exceed 185 percent of the federal poverty index, which equals a maximum income of $3,269.00 per month before taxes for a household of four people. LEAP eligible households also automatically qualify for weatherization services. For more
